Thursday, February 19, 2009 – An expert in civil registries from the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) visited Saint Lucia February 12-17, 2009. The expert, Mr. Carlos Ernesto Bolanos was made available through the OAS Civil Registry and Identities Project. This mission by the expert followed up the January 12-16 visit of a joint technical team which met with various senior officials of the government of Saint Lucia, including Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General’s Chamber, the Civil Status Registry, the E-Government Unit and Electoral Authorities, on issues related to civil registries and electoral reform. The objective was to analyze and define continued technical assistance to Saint Lucia in both these areas. On this first follow-up mission to the January discussions, the expert in civil registries met with officials of the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General’s Chamber, the Civil Status Registry, the E-Government Unit and the Electoral Department. As a result, the OAS General Secretariat is now in the process of formulating recommendations for improved processes in the area of civil registries. The technical assistance offered in civil registry modernization is intended to improve the country’s access to, retrieval and storage of important data related to births, deaths and marriages and the access to this data among government agencies.
