Friday, February 6, 2009 – Minister for Commerce, Industry and Consumer
Affairs Honourable Tessa Mangal has pledged her commitment to her new position
following a recent Cabinet reshuffle.
Miss Mangal, who has been Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister for
several months, said she is well aware that many Saint Lucians will be looking
expectantly to the ministry for answers in these difficult economic times. She
expects to acquire a firm grasp of the ministry and her responsibilities before
making any pronouncements. She however commented on the effects of the global
economic crisis.
“It is not a situation which is the best for everyone; what I want people to
understand it is that government is concerned. Government is willing to do what
is within its power to make it better for Saint Lucia but I also want Saint
Lucians to understand that this is a situation that the entire world faces and
it is not peculiar to us.”
She says while government makes certain adjustments to deal with the crisis, the
the citizenry must also make personal adjustments.
“Given our small size—our dependence on a lot of imported products and so on—we
need not only to look to government for solutions but we must also look to
ourselves.”
Minister Rufus Bousquet who previously held the portfolio is now responsible for
External Affairs, International Trade and Investment.
