Wednesday, December 9, 2009  The National  Emergency Management Office Secretariat   over the weekend, officially opened  the new multi-million dollar  Emergency Operation  Centre (EOC), under the Second Disaster Management Project.

Director of NEMO, Ms. Dawn French, underscored the realization of plans over two administrations, noting that the facility is a major boost for Saint Lucia’s effectiveness in disaster management.

“The then prime minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony, put  his signature to a loan with the World Bank, to put together what was the Disaster Management Project part 1 and part 2 that  brought a lot of significant structural development—this building being one such manifestation. Then, of course, our present prime minister, saw it was a good thing and gave it his blessings and continued to ensure that we had that project completed.”

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King,  who is the Chairperson of the National Emergency Management Advisory Council (NEMAC) and CARICOM lead for disaster management in the Caribbean  applauded the milestone.

“It is as a result of climate change that we are called upon to do such things like the construction of emergency operation centres, to undertake mitigation and adaptation measures to safeguard our communities.”

Mr. King will be leaving for Copenhagen, Denmark, on the weekend, along with a local contingent attending the landmark 190-nation United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
