Contact: Office of the Prime Minister
Thursday, December 10, 2009 – Government has made all necessary arrangements to facilitate the payment of entitlements to employees of the Water and Sewerage Company (WASCO), as a result of the cessation of operations of the company in 1999.
Last month, Honourable Stephenson King, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Economic Affairs and National Development, met with the staff of WASCO to communicate Government’s decision regarding the future direction of the company. At that meeting Prime Minister King assured the workers that all outstanding obligations to the former employees of the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) would be paid by December 11, 2009.
The Ministry of Finance, on Friday last week, made payment of the full amount of interest and severance entitlement to WASCO. Employee representatives, management of WASCO and Government representatives had earlier agreed to an interest rate payment of 3.6% compounded over the relevant period.
This severance pay to the workers of WASA has been outstanding for the last ten years, prior to the term of this Administration, and the government wishes to thank all employees for their patience and tolerance.
Government has also reaffirmed its commitment to the reorganization and recapitalization of WASCO and encourages all stakeholders to give their full support to the process of revitalization of WASCO. |
