Friday,  August 7, 2009 –  Government has begun construction on a state-of-the-art home for the senior citizens of Saint Lucia in Black Bay, Vieux Fort.

Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon Stephenson King, toured the site for the facility which will replace the Malgretoute Home in Soufriere on Wednesday, and expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction work thus far.

Prime Minister King says the construction of the facility is in keeping with his government’s commitment to provide quality care and housing for the senior citizens.

“The intention really, is to provide senior citizens with an environment that is more conducive and a lot healthier and comfortable, with enough space to accommodate the residents and families who come to visit their loved ones. We also want our senior citizens to receive greater care and attention at this new facility.”

When completed, the new senior citizens' home will accommodate about one hundred and ten residents, an administrative department, and recreational, spiritual and other support services.

Construction on the facility began in June this year and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2010.

“Really this is a national project but it will cater to the residents already being housed at Malgretoute and people who have for some time now been applying for accommodation at Malgretoute.

“I am very proud of this project and I believe the contractors are doing an exceptional job;  they are also on time with the project. I am also certain that they are within budget for this very beautiful project.”

The site of the Magoutoute Home in Soufriere has been earmarked for a tourism development, which will commence once the residents have been relocated to the new facility.

Prime Minister King says his government is sympathetic to the cause of senior citizens and will continue to find ways to improve their quality of life.
