Saint Lucia gives back to Taiwan

Wednesday, August 19, 2009 – Taiwan Ambassador to St. Lucia His Excellency Tom Chou is moved by a decision by the Government of St. Lucia to give back to his country, devastated by the passage of Typhoon Morakot on August 10th, killing over 120.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King presented a cheque of US$100,000 to Ambassador Chou on Monday, as a relief fund to help Taiwan recover from the disaster.  An emotional Ambassador Chou expressed his country’s appreciation for what he described as a treasured donation from the government and people of Saint Lucia.

 “On behalf of the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan and the people who suffered most, I would like to express my appreciation to Mr. King and the people of St. Lucia for your generosity. St. Lucia is a true friend of Taiwan and I think Typhoon Morakot has bonded us together,” said Ambassador Chou

Prime Minister King said the donation will help the Indigenous people and those who live in the mountainous regions and who have been hit the hardest with some villages being virtually destroyed.

Prime Minister King, who along with his Cabinet took the decision at a meeting last week, is certain Taiwan will rise out of this disaster with an even greater will and determination to put measures in place to fight future natural disasters, with the resilience, hard work and tenaciousness of its people and government.

“This may be considered small, but I believe it is a symbolic demonstration of our support and appreciation and also to give our moral support to the people of Taiwan to show that we here in St. Lucia value that very significant relationship between our countries,” said Prime Minister King.

The Embassy of Taiwan in Saint Lucia has reported receiving numerous visits, telephone calls and emails from government officials, citizens and international organizations expressing concerns and condolences for the country’s loss.
