Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - Notably, the World Health Organization today renamed the flu the "North American Flu," which helps disassociate it from pigs and pork.
The original name of this virus has created an unfortunate impression among the public. This subtype is similar to one that is common among pigs, but this particular subtype is different than any that has ever been reported in pigs.
At this point, there is no confirmed relationship between the human outbreak and contact with pigs. The World Animal Health Organization or OIE today issued a statement saying that the virus should not be called Swine Flu. It is more accurately called North American Flu. The organization is working to update its website and others to reflect this change.
The C.D.C. and the W.H.O. have also stated clearly that eating pork is not associated with this influenza subtype. |
