Friday, April 3, 2009 – The recently concluded two-day national consultation on Saint Lucia’s economy, is said to have provided an opportunity for government to harness a truly national response to the effect of the global economic downturn affecting the island.
Prime Minister Stephenson King has indicated that the consultation—the first of its kind—will influence the direction of the national budget scheduled for April 21, 2009.
“I wish to assure you that the outcome of the discussion, will inform in some measure, the strategies proposed for the fiscal budget 2009 to 2010,” he told the gathering of public and private sectors as well as social development partners.
Prime Minister King noted that the response strategy must be innovative in providing both short term and long terms measures.
“Firstly there’s a need for recognition of the fact that these are not ordinary times; these are abnormal times requiring abnormal actions. These are indeed very challenging times which require us to use our collective resources, our intellectual capital, along with whatever physical inputs we can muster in facing the future,” said the prime minister. The national consultation was held in association with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Economic Planning and National Development and the National Consultative Council (NCC). |
