Thursday, April 16, 2009 – Particularly concerned about the recent dismissal of workers, the Government of Saint Lucia, through the Ministry of Labour, Information and Broadcasting, has decided to establish a registry of unemployed persons.

“The registry will assist the ministry in designing programmes geared towards creating employment for the unemployed, and to serve as a repository for firms wishing to identify persons for temporary and long-term employment,” said Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Ms. Thecla Augustin.

It is also anticipated that such a database will be a ready source of information for selection of persons for overseas unemployment.

“In addition,” Ms. Augustin noted, “the ministry’s intention is to collaborate with government and non-governmental agencies, to assist unemployed persons to develop the capacity to become self employed individually, and within groups, and hopefully, to become employers themselves.”

The ministry is therefore calling on all unemployed persons to register at the Department of Labour from April 20, 2009, from 9 a.m.
