Friday, 26 September 2008 – With the Caribbean region prone to natural disasters, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union – CBU – has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund – UNICEF – Office for Latin America and the Caribbean to host a workshop on Caribbean Media and Emergencies – Responding to Our Reality from a rights-based Perspective. The workshop is being attended by radio and TV journalist from CBU member stations who have not participated in previous UNICEF sponsored emergency workshops.

Speaking on behalf of the president of the CBU, Vice president Vic Fernandes, indicated training for journalists is the number one priority for the CBU, given that the media is the main conduit for passing on invaluable information to the public.

Acting prime minister of Barbados, the Hon. Freundel Stuart, said that the media must be seen as extremely important in protecting and promoting reliable information in a timely and accurate manner.

He warned against the attempt to be the first to report on emergencies whilst paying little regard to facts.

High on the agenda of the workshop is the focus of the impact of emergencies on children and how journalists should report about children from a rights-based perspective.

The two-day workshop which ends on the 23rd of September is being attended by over 30 participants from the region.
