Monday, 22 September 2008 –  Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King will leave the island Monday, September 22, 2008 to address the 63rd Session of the United Nation General Assembly. Prime Minister King will be joined by UN Ambassador Dr. Kieth St. Aimee and Saint Lucia’s Ambassador to CARICOM, June Soomer.

 

This year’s session of the General Assembly is taking place against the background of multifarious threats and challenges facing the international community including the downturn in the global economy.

 

During his September 25th  address Prime Minister King is expected to pledge Saint Lucia’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals as well as make a case for more resources to be directed to small island states as they attempt to combat crime, global warming and the food and energy crisis.

 

The Prime Minister will also urge member states to consider broadening the United Nations Security Council to include a permanent member state from the African continent and also support Taiwan’s bid for meaningful participation in the specialized agencies of the United Nations.

 

While in New York Prime Minister King will take the opportunity to meet with other heads of state and government as well as hold discussions with a number of prospective investors.

 

The Prime Minister is expected to return to the island on October 2nd , 2008.
