Monday, September 22, 2008 – The National Council of and for Older Persons is getting set for the international observance of the United Nations Day for the Older Persons on October first.
Director of the organization Ms. Helen Charles said the Council is collaborating closely with the Ministry of Health’s Division of Human Services in creating a programme for the day’s observance. The occasion, she said, will coincide with two major strides which have been achieved via governmental and corporate support.
One is the selection of a senior team of five athletes to participate in the World Senior Games headed in the USA, and the other is the approval for the establishment of a day care for the elderly in the community of La Clery.
She said the focus of the Council is still fixed on breaking down barriers, such as discrimination and neglect, which continue to affect the lives of the elderly in society. Senior teams from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Saint Vincent are also heading to the World Senior Games which will be held in Utah, USA. |
