Tuesday, September 23, 2008 – Prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King took a break from prime ministerial duties on Wednesday September 17, 2008 to say thanks to his Alma Mater—the Saint Lucia Seventh Day Adventist Academy. Mr. King who graduated from the institution some thirty years ago said he's always felt indebted to the institution, which he credits for making him who he is today.
“I believe what the school did for me was not simply providing an academic opportunity for me in life, to exploit my natural ability and talent and to allow me to find the resources within me, but to shape me and mould me into an individual, balanced with academic, social and spiritual qualities that I believe our society needs today,” the Prime Minister said in a brief address to the students.
During his visit the prime minister presented a total of fifteen computers to the school, to help boost its Information Technology and Communication Program. The choice of donation was made following an assessment of the institution's needs.
“I think the time has come for me to give back part of what the school gave to me; and let me say that it is the beginning of things to come for this institution. Because I believe that the contribution of this institution to me as an individual can never be measured,” he added.
Prime Minister King called on the students to remain focused on their goals and dreams, in preparation for the competition, and the challenges ahead.
“Understand the teaching of this institution. I believe that it is through the teaching of this institution that the many products of this SDA Academy have been able to excel and make a positive contribution to their society,” he said.
President of the Saint Lucia Mission of Seventh Day Adventist Johnson Frederick, who also addressed the students, said what the prime minister has attained should serve as an impetus for them, as they strive for excellence.
“The academy has distinguished itself not only in the lofty ideals and values, which she has sought to impart to its sons and daughters but also in her luminaries who hold positions of honour locally and around the world,” said Frederick.
The Saint Lucia SDA Academy is a private institution situated at Sunny Acres, in the north of the island. It is operated by the Saint Lucia Mission of Seventh Day Adventists. |
