Tuesday, September 2, 2008 –Cultural Development Officer with the Cultural Development Foundation, George 'Fish' Alphonse, says he is generally pleased with the public’s response to this year's La Rose festivities.
The La Rose Festival and the feast of St. Rose De Lima are observed on the 30th of August each year. Over seventeen groups participated, in addition to one visiting group from French Guyana, in festivities held Sunday at the Derek Walcott Square, following a procession from the Minor Basilica.
“This year for the first time we saw three Presbyterians Father Mitchell, Father Anthony and Father Cetoute. It was a beautiful service,” Alphonse said.
The turn out of the youth at this year's event was also worth noting. The CDF has made youth a big part of its strategy to ensure the future survival of this indigenous celebration.
“Most of the groups have young queens and kings. We have a number of young persons this year celebrating and that's a good sign, which means that the future for La Rose is good, based on the participation of the young queens and kings. This is very good,” he said.
Alphonse is hoping that more persons, particularly from the Castries basin, will show greater participation in the annual La Rose festival. The Cultural Development Foundation is now preparing for the La Marguerite Festival, which takes place in the month of October. |
