Wednesday, October 8, 2008 – Underprivileged families in Saint Lucia are the recipients of a goodwill gesture by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The Division of Human Services and Gender Relations within the Ministry of Health recently received a donation of a 40 foot container of goods. The goods, valued at over EC$220, 000 comprise clothing, educational materials, toys and other basic necessities.

“We care especially for family and the underprivileged, and it is a real honour to be sitting here this morning, to know within my heart that a number of underprivileged children and young school goers will be receiving items which will go a long way for them. We are also looking forward at all times to assist any establishment with a worthy cause,” President of the Saint Lucia Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Elder Debauville said on behalf of his church.

Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary within Ministry of Health, Peggy Ann Soudatt, extended the gratitude of the government of Saint Lucia. The task of providing assistance to the most vulnerable members of society, Soudatt said, is one that the government has undertaken using a variety of mechanisms.

“The task is an enormous one, and requires as much assistance as possible. It is for this reason that we take this opportunity to thank our friends of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints for this very generous contribution. We thank you for having recognized the plight of the underprivileged persons in our society and coming forward to assist St. Lucia's children, families, and communities,” Soudatt said.

Director of the Division of Human Services and Gender Relations Clementia Eugene expressed her profound thanks to the donors in the form of a heartfelt original poem. In light of the difficulties encountered in seeking private sector support, Eugene said, the gesture of the church is a great reassurance.
