Wednesday, 08 October 2008 – A publication, which identifies the many bird species found on the island, was officially launched last week Friday, 3rd October.  The project was born out of a bird watching initiative executed by the Republic of China on Taiwan and the Saint Lucian Government last year.

Its publication’s cover features the national bird of Saint Lucia, the Amazona versicolor, and inside, its colourful pages illustrate some 168 different kinds of birds, giving pertinent information on the various species.

“Our efforts mainly were on four areas: Helping Saint Lucia publish the bird book, was the first step. The second is to help Saint Lucia develop a bird watching website.  The third is for St. Lucia to participate in the largest bird fair in the world and the fourth to explore bird watching markets in Canada, United States and United Kingdom,” said Taiwan's Ambassador to St. Lucia His Excellency Tom Chou.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King is very excited about the strategic marketing of the eco-system sector, which he said, this project can facilitate.  With the island’s known natural beauty, he said, maximising all efforts of marketing makes perfect sense.

“What this has done for us is that it has given us exposure and it has demonstrated that in our endeavour to find ways and means of sustaining our economy and to find streams of activity to improve on our economy, there still are some tangible areas that we were not initially able to place the dollar sign before but in time will bring about a tremendous amount of wealth to the our people and to our country,” said Prime Minister King.

The publication is said to have been featured with rave reviews at bird fairs in London and Holland, spurring interest in those who viewed it to visit the country and do a bit of bird watching themselves.
