Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - The Department of Fisheries continues in its efforts towards the conservation and sustainable use of sea turtles. Currently, sea turtles are tagged in Saint Lucia by applying an external metal tag inscribed with contact information (numbers and words) to the left and right, back flippers. Tagging of sea turtles is a special means of marking a turtle to allow for the recognition of individuals or populations, for research purposes. By reading the inscription found on a tag, coupled with reports from observers, the Department of Fisheries obtains information on where a sea turtle was tagged and to which countries or areas it has travelled. This information is critical for joint management.

During the sea turtle fishery which was in effect from October 01, 2008 to December 31, 2008 (both days inclusive), fishers who harvest sea turtles in accordance with the Fisheries Regulations and stipulated conditions are asked to return any tags found (or the information inscribed on a tag), to the Department of Fisheries. In addition, fishers are asked to submit information on the species, the area where the sea turtle was caught and an approximation of its weight and length.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact the Department of Fisheries from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (Tel. (758) 468 4135/4139) to report any observations regarding tagged sea turtles.
