Monday,  October 13, 2008 –  Kuumba Designs, a Saint Lucian company owned by Esther Joseph, won the award for  “Best New Product/Product Line” at the recently held 15th  Caribbean Gift and Craft Show (CGCS) at the Sherbourne Conference Centre in Barbados. Ms. Joseph walked away with this award out of a field of 32 exhibitors for her crafty and innovative use of crochet and linen to create truly eye-catching products Other Saint Lucian exhibitors who came in  for special commendation at the fashion show dubbed “Caribbean Fashion Rhythms” were Shazi Chalon of Shazi’s Boutique, Sharon Tanner of Sha Creations and Christopher Joseph of Immortals.

 

The Caribbean Gift and Craft Show, the Region’s premier fashion event for designers of craft and related products was held from October 2-5, 2008 under the theme “Celebrating Handmade Designs and Caribbean Traditions.”

 

The show drew participants from as far north as the Dominican Republic to Trinidad and Tobago in the south of the Caribbean. Almost 200 buyers from the Caribbean and the United States were present. Sixteen companies from Saint Lucia took part in this year's show and displayed products ranging from fashion, leather craft, paintings, home furnishings, ceramics, herbal products and banana paper products.

Participation of Saint Lucia’s contingent in this year event was made possible through funding provided by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Commerce, the Office of Private Sector Relations (OPSR), the OECS Export Development Unit and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

 

The Caribbean Gift and Craft Show remains one of the major trade promotion events for local artisans and fashion designers in the region and has been branded as the vanguard for stimulating and promoting the development of new products, new markets and increasing export of handicrafts from the region.
