Tuesday, October 28, 2008 – The Government of Saint Lucia has approved the continuation of the Energy Saving Light Bulb Project to be executed through town and village councils, community voluntary groups and national clubs.

A committee under the chairmanship of the chief electrical engineer in the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities will be established with representatives from, the ministries of Housing, Urban Renewal and Local Government, Social Transformation, Human Resource Development, Public Service, Youth and Sports, Health, Wellness, Family Affairs, National Mobilization, Human Services and Gender Relations and the ministry responsible for sustainable development

The Committee is expected to develop an implementation plan for the distribution of the 1ight bulbs to domestic households in all remaining communities on the island. Last year, the pilot phase of the project was implemented in the villages of Anse-La-Raye and Canaries where one thousand, six hundred and thirty eight (1638) households or 3.4 percent of the 47,713 total households in Saint Lucia were visited.

Households which benefited from the pilot phase have realized reductions in energy consumption.

The Public Utilities ministry is calling on Saint Lucians to cooperate with the personnel who will be engaged in the distribution of the light bulbs so that the project could be completed in the shortest possible time.
