Tuesday, 18 November 2008 – The Rodent Control Coordination Unit (RCCU) is said to be in transition. The unit will, on November 27th, be handing over its activities to the Environmental Health Department in the Ministry of Health, at a small ceremony to be held at the NIC Conference Room.
The RCCU, during its existence, has seen a 65 percent reduction in the rat population, registering significant positive changes in the public response to the programme. The strategy used to ensure the sustainability of the programme included training, community education, media involvement, baiting and surveillance and monitoring.
Working closely with partners such as the St Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, officials say, has helped with the success of the initiative. The national education programmes, officials say, must be continued, strengthened with steps that take food away from the rats before baiting.
Utilizing proper methods and timing of garbage disposal, they say, must also be continued to ensure the population of rats is kept down.
