Friday,  November 21, 2008 –  Minister for Physical Development and the Environment, Honourable Richard Frederick is asserting government’s commitment to preserving natural resources.

Conservation of our environment, the minister said, is an extremely important dimension of sustainable development.

Honourable Frederick spoke during the launch of the SAVE programme targeting the preservation of an OECS protected area in Pointe Sable, Vieux-Fort.

“I want to assure you the fact that I am present here today is a reflection of the interest of my ministry- the Ministry of Physical Development and the Environment, and that of government as a whole, in effectively managing what remains of our country’s natural resources, and in managing this OPAAL site in particular. Over the years, we have pursued development without always considering the negative consequences on the environment.”

With the passage of time, Frederick said, it has become increasingly clear that the status quo cannot continue if the future generation of leaders is to have an environment worth saving.

As such, he continued, the aim is to achieve the best use of resources in a manner that will benefit both present and future generations.

“It is for this reason that my ministry is taking steps to implement the recently approved National Land Policy that calls for sustainable management of land resources. This policy, among other things, recognizes the value of protected areas to environmental management. At this time, my Ministry if moving to complete the development of environmental impact assessment regulations.”

The regulations, Frederick said, are in order to ensure that major developments are done in a manner that does not cause undue environmental damage.
