Tuesday, May 20, 2008 – High level bodies such as the United Nations and the International Labour Organization - ILO- have highlighted the worldwide drop in union membership among workers. It was against this backdrop that the Civil Service Association (CSA) on Tuesday, May 20th,convened a two-day workshop for shop stewards. Over thirty shop stewards attended the two day session which ended on Wednesday.
Assistant General Secretary Lilia Auguste says the over two thousand strong union, is seeking to strengthen its membership and to this end shop stewards must be equipped to play an integral role.
“In light of the reduction in union membership throughout the world, St. Lucia included, we felt it necessary to bring them together in order to get them to appreciate the need to go to the respective branches and to recruit and mobilize persons who are non-union members. In doing so, we are going to give them an appreciation of the need for the trade union.”
The shop stewards benefited from several lectures designed to sharpen their understanding of industrial relations .
“Additionally, we want to make them appreciate their roles and function as general council members . They form the secondary level leadership of the organization; so they would be familiar in terms of the collective bargaining process, in terms of the role and functions of the union and to understand the objective of the constitution that governs the organization.”
President of the CSA Mr. Joseph Dosserie applauded the initiative describing it as CSA's efforts to produce well rounded shop stewards who can take up the mantle of leadership in the future. |
