Thursday, May 29, 2008 – Regional Chief Executive Officers of the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation (CARILEC) this week participated in a two-day conference held in Saint Lucia, at the Bay Gardens Hotel.

The conference was co-hosted by the St. Lucia Electricity Services Limited (LUCELEC) under the theme “Creating the Future: Strong Vision, Bold Decisions.”

LUCELEC” CEO Trevor Louisy reflected on that theme: “The theme for this conference is asking us to use our collective experiences to devise solutions and strategies to deal with the issues that confront us, envisage the possibilities for the future, and exercise the resolve to take the bold decisions that will get us there—where we want to be—or at this rate, where we must go.”

As key decision makers of their respective organizations, the CEOs are poised to engage in vigorous discussions to secure a successful future for regional power utilities. Keynote speaker of the opening ceremony Dr. Trevor Byer commended the CARILEC delegates on their achievements thus far.

“There is now virtually universal access to electricity in the areas served by the CARILEC utilities, save in the large two continental countries; which is not surprising that they will arrive at in time. They are vast areas. This is a major achievement, which few other developing country sub-regions of the world have achieved,” said Byer

Byer cautioned; however, that regional utilities should seek the most practical and relevant methods of development, as duplicating systems of more developed countries does not always prove successful.

The conference culminated with a technical tour of LUCELEC's facilities, and a boat cruise for participants.
