Wednesday, 28 May 2008 – Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King will, in the coming days, announce major changes to his Cabinet, following the settlement of a dispute within his government.
The 17-month-old administration, for the last few weeks, has had to mitigate against possible collapse, after two members of parliament on the government side —Marcus Nicholas, MP for Dennery North and Rufus Bousquet, MP for Choiseul/Saltibus—withdrew their support for Mr. King as prime minister.
The situation was said to be amicably resolved, and Prime Minister King, who addressed the nation Tuesday, announced the return of the Choiseul MP to his Cabinet. Mr. King; however, did not say what Mr. Bousquet’s portfolios would be or that of others within the government.
“My Government is finally re-united in purpose, with both the Honourable Rufus Bousquet and Marcus Nicholas agreeing to re-establish their support for me as Prime Minister. We have rededicated ourselves to delivering on our promises to the electorate,” the prime minister disclosed. “We know only too well that valuable time has been wasted and we will do our utmost to catch-up. In the circumstances, I have also agreed and decided to reinstate the MP for Choiseul, as is my prerogative. However, in the weeks ahead I will be making announcements in that regard. The matter of the police is progressing satisfactorily. In the meantime I have assured that things are already back to normal. You will receive an update on that next week.”
Mr. King also apologised to the nation for his late address to them last week Tuesday, which he said was due largely to pressures associated with the impasse within his administration and his preparation for the just ended OECS Heads of Government Meeting.
He also regretted the departure of his Economic Planning Minister Ausbert d’ Auvergne, credited for the thrust of government’s quadrant economic plan. |
