Friday,  May 9, 2008 –  As the use of performance enhancing drugs in sports continue to be  a troublesome issue in professional sports worldwide, the application of chemical metrology in sports is becoming increasingly important.

At the opening of an Inter-American Metrology System workshop on chemical metrology currently being held in St. Lucia, Minister for Trade, Industry and Commerce, Senator the Honourable Guy Mayers reflected on the relevance of chemical metrology to sporting events in St. Lucia.

“The accurate measurement of doping substances in urine samples is an example of the application of chemical metrology to ensure fairness in sports. This year's theme for World Metrology Day, observed on May 20th of each year,  is “Metrology and Sports” and reflects the application of metrology in sports. In November of last year, St. Lucia hosted its first live international boxing event called Showtime in Paradise, in which the boxers were randomly tested for doping substances. We anticipate that as sports tourism becomes a major contributor to the economy, chemical metrology will allow us to catch the sports cheats.”

The development of chemical metrology capabilities for sports in St. Lucia is an idea being explored at the workshop in light of the country's recent hosting of Cricket World Cup and West Indies cricket matches.
