Monday, March 17, 2008 – The perception that the south of the island offers less to the discerning visitor, in terms of leisure and entertainment, will soon be dashed through the efforts of the Southern Tourism Development Corporation (STDC).

The agenda designed to dispel this myth is the hosting of the Saint Lucia Kite Surfing Fiesta later this month. General Manager of the STDC Dania George said though the event is new, it does have a promising future.

“The Second Annual Saint Lucia Kite Surfing Fiesta will be held on March 29th and 30th at Sandy Beach in Vieux Fort.  Basically, STDC is using this activity to promote the south, to get  visitors - not just from outside St. Lucia -  but also  those residing in the north of the island to come down on  the weekend to stay at a guest house or at an hotel, to promote the south and the facilities that we have in Vieux Fort,” she said.

Ms. George says some big names associated to the sport have given their commitment to be there.

Dimitri Maramenides, who is a pioneer of kite surfing and Susie May the queen of kite surfing, will be part of the kite surfing festival.

According to Ms. George, the activity is also an opportunity for the promotion of eco-tourism as it is totally friendly to the environment.  Persons interested in learning about the competition can log on to the STDC’s website at http://www.stluciakitesurfing.com.
