Wednesday, March 5, 2008 – The St. Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority on Saturday, March 1, 2007 held its sixth annual National Clean-Up Activity Awards. The event, which took place at the Civil Service Association (CSA) Centre, sought to acknowledge individuals and community persons as well as groups, and private and public sector entities that had contributed significantly to the success of the National Clean-Up Activity, 2007.
Saturday's gathering was addressed by Hon. Richard Frederick, Minister for Physical Development, Housing, Urban Renewal and Local Government, Mr. George James, Chairperson, Board of Directors of the SLSWMA and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Physical Development as well as Mrs. Geraldine Lendor-Gabriel, General Manager of the SLSWMA.
In the corporate community category Super J Super Markets, Bank of Nova Scotia and Daher Broadcasting Service were awarded for outstanding contributions in cash or kind. The St. Lucia Red Cross Society and the Royal St. Lucia Police Force each received an award for the exemplary service rendered during the schools' anti-litter march.
Schools were recognized for outstanding performances during the national anti-litter march - a major activity designed to commence the observance of the national clean-up activity.
Awards for the most creative slogans/placards (first place) in the infant/primary and secondary categories were received by Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School, Roblot Combined School, Bocage Secondary School and Piaye Secondary School
Anse La Raye Infant School, Laborie Boys' Primary School, Ciceron Secondary School received awards for the most creative slogans/placards (second place) in the infant/primary and secondary categories. Patience Combined School and Marigot Secondary School placed third for the most creative slogans/placard in the infant/primary and secondary categories.
The Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary School, Laborie Boys' Primary School, Marigot Secondary School and the Micoud Secondary School were awarded the best organized/energetic group (first place) in the infant/primary and secondary categories.
Anglican Infant School, Roblot Combined School and Ciceron Secondary School were awarded the best organized/energetic group (second place) in the infant/primary and secondary categories. Aux Leon Combined School, Ti Rocher Combined School and Entrepot Secondary School was awarded the best organized/energetic group (third place) in the primary and secondary categories.
During the awards ceremony, the SLSWMA launched the theme for the National Clean-Up Activity, 2008 – “Gotta Go Green, Keep it Clean, Stop the Littering”. The audience was encouraged to commence plans for the activity to ensure even greater success in 2008. |
