Friday, March 14, 2008 – A new body has been formed on the island to deepen the practice of democratic governance and public input in national development. The National Consultative Council (NCC), inaugurated on Tuesday, March 11th, has been charged with participating in the shaping and implementing of a national vision for Saint Lucia.
The NCC falls under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Economic Planning, Investment and National Development. Minister responsible for that portfolio Senator the Honourable Ausbert d'Auvergne, at the official launch, said the work of the Council will be visible to the public in the coming weeks.
“In the context of the challenges that currently face this country the National Consultative Council, with broad based membership, is being inaugurated today. The council comprises 24 members, a membership that signifies the diversity of representation that is necessary to allow all the sectors that characterize a modern democratic society to be engaged in the process of national discussion,” the minister said.
Meantime Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King said the establishment of the National Consultative Council was not a political step, but a critical component in getting all citizens on board the national development strategy. “This is for me a very proud moment as it represents another manifestation of the commitment of the administration which I head, to be a government of inclusion, a government which is determined to provide avenues for the involvement of all sections of society in the process of national development. It is also a government which encourages discussion, exchange of ideas sharing of experiences and one that is prepared to listen to its citizens.”
The National Consultative Council replaces the National Social and Economic Council (NESC). |
