Friday, 28 March 2008 – Major developments in the island's health care system are again centred on the unfinished mental health complex along the Millennium Highway.
At a press conference on Friday, Minister for Health Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir said the new plans for converting the partially completed building into a dual facility, is being placed in the public domain for serious consideration and feedback.
The new plans include a 40-bed psychiatric hospital and a 162-bed general hospital. Minister Mondesir stressed financial considerations such as manageable cost of completion and more affordable maintenance cost, as key advantages the new proposal has over the former plans to build two separate hospitals.
“I want the general public and the media to understand that this not confirmed; this is just an idea to obtain feedback from the people to see what they will get and if they will be happy. I am having meetings with various other groups of people in government before we come to a final decision,” he said at the press conference held at the GIS studios.
Taiwan's Ambassador to Saint Lucia His Excellency Tom Chou said his government is committed to improving the project initially undertaken by the previous administration with the financial assistance from The People’s Republic of China.
“When we try to implement the project, we always consider whether we can do it better. And whether the project can serve the interest of all people. All projects whether large or small is a joint effort,” he said.
The plan includes the erection of a wall that will be used to separate the general and psychiatric hospitals. |
