Thursday, June 19, 2008 The Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA) will, in the coming days, host a special workshop to address the needs of blind and visually impaired women on the island.

According to the Executive Director of the SLBWA Anthony Avril, the event was originally scheduled to fall within activities marking May as Blindness Awareness Month, but had to be rescheduled.

I am happy to announce that we will be holding this workshop on June on 25 at the Bay Gardens Hotel under the theme: “Women on the move ensuring personal development”.  This workshop will hopefully start a new drive that will lead to assisting blind women right around the island,” said Mr. Avril.

Technical Adjustment to Blindness Officer Winnie Weeks says, there is need for persons to understand the special circumstances confronting such women.

“Our objectives for the workshop would be to empower blind and visually impaired women in the provision and development of coping mechanisms for positive and successful living. Also to create an avenue of networking among these organizations and the individuals they belong to. We also would like them to develop a skills bank of professionals, who are also potential volunteers to assist the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association and also its development agenda,” Weeks said

The SLBWA official said young women make up the subset of visually impaired persons on the island, and so a programme had to be implemented to take care of their needs.
