Thursday, June 26, 2008 – Residents of Castries, particularly the community of Babonneau have been the grateful recipients of physiotherapy services, provided by a junior volunteer of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV).

Katsura Nagai is a physiotherapist assigned to the Ministry of Health by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).  Since her tenure in Saint Lucia began in March last year, Nagai has been aiding the Ministry of Health in carrying out its mandate to improve patient rehabilitation.

Community Health Aide of the Fond Assau Health Centre Nadia Anthony expressed her gratitude for Nagai's services.

“Katsura does special exercises with the clients, especially bed ridden clients, disabled persons, and those who recover from seizures and so on. I find it's a very good help to the community, and I wish she would be here more often.  It's sometimes every two or three months, but Katsura is doing a very good job,” Anthony said.

Due to increasing incidents of illness and amputation related to diabetes and hypertension on island, the ministry of health has sought to improve rehabilitation practices in an effort to curb the severity of these illnesses.

The house visits provided by the community health aides in collaboration with the Japanese volunteer have proven to be highly successful and have been well received by patients who would otherwise be unable to obtain the required care.
