Wednesday,  June 4, 2008 –  The fishing village of Anse la Raye will soon enjoy the benefits of a new jetty and fisheries complex through the aid of the government of Japan.

A signing ceremony for the exchange of notes in preparation for the development of fisheries infrastructure recently took place between the governments of St. Lucia and Japan.

Parliamentary representative for Anse La Raye/Canaries, Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir, recognised the signing as an important milestone in building capacity for his constituency, which relies largely on the fishing industry.

“This project will help immensely. It will increase the capacity to store fish by the fishermen in this area. The fishing complex is long overdue. The facility is needed to increase and enhance the method of fishing and storage in Anse-La-Raye. It will also have a multiplier effect in the village of Canaries. We are hoping that not too far from now, Canaries will enjoy such a project also,” said Mondesir

The grant of just over five million U.S. dollars, being provided by the government of Japan, will be utilised for the construction of a new jetty, an improved fisheries complex and the provision of fishing gear.

His Excellency Dr. Koichiro Seki, Japanese Ambassador to St. Lucia, highlighted the objective of the project. “This project seeks to further contribute to the development of fisheries in Anse- La-Raye and that will contribute to the overall development of Fisheries in St. Lucia, as well as the Tourism industry through the Fish Friday event. I understand that the fishing industry plays an important role in the economic development of St. Lucia, providing both full time and seasonal employment and contributing significantly to domestic food security and the national GDP.”

Also present at the signing was Minister for Fisheries, the Honourable Ezechiel Joseph who expressed his gratitude to the Japanese ambassador for re-establishing the initiative as a priority.
