Wednesday, July 2, 2008 –The Hewanorra Musical Society ( HMS) is embarking on redressing intellectual property rights issues, in the cable television and music industries, through a public education and advocacy strategy.
HMS believes that a concerted public education and advocacy programme is required to engender greater public sensitivity towards the moral and economic rights of creators. Piracy and other violations of intellectual property rights have a negative impact on the economic sustainability of creators.
“We believe that this dynamic environment urges a sustained and comprehensive public discussion of the issues associated with protection of IPR, especially in relation to the music and broadcast industries,” said Steve Etienne, General Manager of the Hewanorra Musical Society.
To date, HMS has held informal discussion with cable television provider Cable and Wireless and two local experts in the IPR and broadcast industries, with a view to soliciting support for a comprehensive public education and advocacy project, on IPR issues.
The issue of the protection of intellectual property rights, is a regularly debated issue locally, and assumes greater urgency for all players in the entertainment and media arena, during the carnival season. |
