Tuesday, July 29, 2008 – Government has increased the level of public assistance to poor persons in the community by $1.6 million.
The amount formally allocated was the sum of $3.3 million annually, but this has been increased to $4.9 million.
This decision was made in the light of increasing prices of food, which is affecting countries all over the world and in which poor persons are particularly vulnerable.
The government has taken note of the plight of the poor in these difficult circumstances and has taken this action to alleviate the condition of those receiving public assistance.
The total number of persons receiving public assistance from the government is 3,985, and the following increases have been made:
Those formerly receiving $85.00 per month will now receive $135.00; other increases are from $125.00 to $180.00; $165 to $220.00; $200.00 to $250.00; and from $250.00 to $300.00.
Public Assistance is also provided for obtaining eye glasses for the poor and burial expenses in cases of death. The new increases come into effect from August 01st, 2008. |
