Friday, 11 July 2008 – Government remain enthusiastic about heightening economic activity on the island. It a view expressed by Minister for Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Renewal Hon. Richard Fredrick, as an entourage from the UK gets set to commence its work on the Castries Remedial Project.
The project is expected to see the redevelopment of Castries and create more economic growth for the city. The UK team, the minister disclosed, met with Cabinet Wednesday to present its plan on achieving that mandate.
“This plan includes the relocation of several persons within the Castries basin to make commercial space available for the expansion of the city,” the minister said in a GIS interview.
As part of this redevelopment plan, government has engaged jointly with the private sector in the construction of a five-storey building, in space made available through the demolition of Block K of the CDC Apartments. That block, which is situated at the corner of Coral and Victoria Streets, was brought down in late March of this year.
“What we are hoping to put a mini-mall on the ground floor, so to speak; space for a supermarket, restaurant, bar, other shops and laundry. We are trying to bring as many services under one roof. On the first and second floors we will have offices and apartments,” he said.
The apartments, he said, will not be for rent, but will be made available for full ownership by buyers. The top floors, the minister said, will be used for what he terms, expensive condos. He said work on the five-storey building will start in the next ninety days. |
