Contact: Claudia Monlouis Thursday, July 10, 2008 – Ten thousand brochure packages will soon be distributed to the public, as the latest fund raising effort by the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA) goes into its most important stage, that of public support for the cause of the vision impaired and blind.
Director of the SLBWA Anthony Avril said the association is confident in the fact that the country is far more sensitized now to the cause of the blind. He attributed this to public education drives undertaken by the SLBWA over the years.
“This is a first step which is being taken, but that is a multi-phased project by publishing, through various means, 10,000 letters. We are hoping that there would be an appropriate response from those who have received the,” Mr. Avril said.
Patron of the Blind Welfare Association, Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy, adding her voice to the national call for overwhelming public response, said if successful this undertaking may well signal a change in fortunes for the Association.
“I would like therefore to appeal to the whole country; we are talking about 10, 000 brochures. You know what our population is, so it must be financial constraints that prevented the association from 160, 000 brochures—one for every citizen. So my suggestion is that people come together and put their contributions in the one package,” she said. Government ministries, schools and other organizations are a few of the sections of the community which are being targeted by the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association in its latest fund raising drive. |
