Friday, 25 January 2008 – The list of artistes to receive awards in the first ever St. Lucia Music Awards slated for February 29th was announced on Friday. A collection of local musicians, sponsors and news media gathered at the National Cultural Centre, to bring an end to weeks of anxiety. Co-producers of the event, Accela Marketing, Cultural Development Foundation, Hewanorra Musical Society and St. Lucia Association of Musicians and Performers were on hand to make the announcement.
The final list was compiled by a group of seven judges, all with backgrounds in music, media and audio/visual production who deliberated in marathon sessions over two days. The entire affair was supervised by the accounting firm of KPMG. They then tabulated the scores and provided the names of the nominees for each category.
According to Managing Director of Accela Marketing Agnes Francis, Friday’s press conference marked the end of an intense selection and judging process.
“Most of the categories were judged on individual songs but the categories of Instrumental of the Year, Producer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Band of the Year and Album of the Year were judged on a body of work,” Francis explained. For most of the awards, the bulk of the points (70%) were awarded for popularity, which was primarily determined by the air play received. Twenty percent of the points were awarded for musical arrangement which covered melody, lyrics and overall harmony of the piece, and 10% for the quality of the finished work
The two exceptions to this rule Francis noted were Arranger of the Year and Best Music Video of the Year award category.
“From the list of nominees, three categories will be put up for public voting through Cable & Wireless texting and online. These are Best New Artiste, Female Artiste of the Year, and Male Artiste of the Year. A fourth category, that of Favourite Regional Performer will also be judged through public voting among the top three regional songs which received the most airplay on our local radio stations. The recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award is selected by the Awards Committee based on Volume of work and Impact on the music industry,” She explained.
Nominees were named in over 20 categories and will have to wait until February 29th before they earn bragging rights to being the best of the best. The St. Lucia Music Awards has already attracted several local and international sponsors, including the ECFH, LUCELEC, RSL, Cable and Wireless, Radio 100 and HTS, BET J, Air Jamaica, OPSR, Party Access, Rhythm FM, The
