Tuesday, January 8, 2008 – The Ministry of Agriculture is currently in dialogue with several bodies as it seeks to map out a new marketing structure for the agriculture industry. According to Agriculture Minister Hon. Ezekiel Joseph, this will result in the formulation of an entity that will embrace every major player, to realize the ministry's goal of sustainable food security.
In this endeavour, plans are afoot to relocate the St. Lucia Marketing Board facility, while discussions have already commenced with an interested company regarding the relocation of the dairy farm at Beausejour, in the island's south.
Said the Minister, “After this is accomplished it is the Ministry's intention to encourage satellite farms, which will assist in meeting the shortfall in the demand for milk to be processed at that dairy farm.”
Cabinet has also approved the recommendation to reposition the Banana Emergency Recovery Unit (BERU), in order to meet the present demands of farmers. The Agriculture Minister says that initiative will be undertaken this year.
Meantime, the minister has expressed thanks to organizations which supported the various initiatives of the ministry last year and says he looks forward to their continued collaboration during this year. |
