Monday,  January 21, 2008 –  President of the Republic of China on Taiwan Chen Shui Bian ended his two-day visit to the island on Wednesday 16th January with the signing of a communique on future cooperation with Saint Lucia and visits to two sites of projects funded by his government.

President Chen Shui Bian had arrived in Saint Lucia the morning before and was received at the Hewanorra International Airport amid pomp and ceremony.  After a motorcade to Castries, the Taiwan President paid a courtesy call on Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy.

Speaking through an interpreter at a state banquet thrown in his honour at the Sandals Grand Tuesday evening, President Bian promised his country's continued support to Saint Lucia, in achieving its developmental goals.

He also promised to be a spokesperson for the island to encourage his countrymen and women to visit Saint Lucia.

“Saint Lucia is in the process of economic transformation and Taiwan remains its faithful ally and development partner, therefore we will continue to assist you in hastening economic development, promoting agricultural diversification, boosting tourism and spurring the development of Saint Lucia's technology industry,” he said.

President Bian said his country is fully committed to sharing with Saint Lucia its experiences in national development and economic transformation.  He said Taiwan is also committed to continue to provide assistance in constituency development, health, education and eco-tourism to the island.

The Taiwan President ended his visit to Saint Lucia with a laid back experience - by Catamaran -   of Saint Lucia's lovely west coat scenery, ahead of his departure at the Hewanorra Airport Wednesday evening.
