Wednesday, January 23, 2008 - An appreciative gathering turned out at the Alliance Francaise on Tuesday 22 January to witness the one man exhibition put on by internationally renowned painter Cedric George. Dubbed “Organometrix and Friends” the inspiring display scheduled to last till January 31, is part of Nobel Laureate Week, which kicked off on Sunday January 20 with the dramatic piece “Masquerade Master” by the Students Musical Theatre.
As well wishers and art lovers trickled into the well designed makeshift gallery, they were welcomed by a captivating and well thought out display of of paintings, that speak to the unlimited imaginativeness of man, manifest on canvas.
When Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy – the Patron of Art in St. Lucia - walked into into the Alliance Francaise pyramid shaped building, at approximately 6 p.m., it was the signal for the formal part of the ceremony to get underway.
First to the podium was Consular for Cooperation and Culture for the OECS, Denis Viart. He referred to the painter's work as “a symbol of Caribbean art” which he further explained as “an art self assured, assertive .. but begging to become better known.”
The French Consular invited the painter and his colleagues to establish a St. Lucia School of Painting which could find succour under the “Caraibes en Creations” (Creative Caribbean), a programme financed by the French government designed to discover new talent and assist in producing and distributing works of art throughout the region and the world.
Governor General Dame Pearlette described Cedric's seminal work as congruent with the thinking of late Saint Lucian Nobel Laureate Sir Arthur Lewis who espoused the notion that it is in the area of the aesthetics that small island developing states must seek to make their mark.
“Whilst there is amazement that as per the population of St. Lucia, we have two Nobel Laureates, I believe profoundly, that if the scope within which such awards are given is extended, we would certainly be on the roster.” Dame Pearlette said. “Cedric's Organometrix, is a decisive. It is shaping a new dynamic in the world of art. When we the world of art is reviewed in the future, Cedric's name will be emblazoned.”
Cedric George explains organometrix as an innovative painting technique based on the fusion of god's creation & culture; life and man made. There are seven styles: Tonal- using the theory of colour from light to lightest or conversely, dark to darkest. Semi-tonal - incorporating some of the theories of colour.
Symbolic– where colour is use as the predominant language in the painting. Line– where the linear concept obtains. Modelling– which is conservative/traditional method with a few elements of organometrix. Abstract– fundamentally surreal. Amalgamated– a combination of life & traditional.
Among the guests who turned up for the well attended event was prime Minister Hon. Stephenson King. 26 of the artiste's paintings are on display.
