OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza

OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza

Tuesday, February 26, 2008 – Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) José Miguel Insulza ended a formal four-day visit to the island Sunday, as guest of Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King, on the occasion of the island's 29th Independence anniversary.

During his visit the OAS Secretary General paid a courtesy call on Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy and participated in Independence Day celebrations.

Speaking during a press conference before his departure, the OAS Secretary General said Saint Lucia and other small states in the region cannot escape the effects of globalisation. However he says the resilience shown by Saint Lucia and other countries within the region, is worthy of note by other developing states in other parts of the world.

“There are global issues such as global warming that have completely changed these countries. The Caribbean is one of the most fragile ecological systems in the world and there is nothing we can do about it for ourselves,” he noted.

Insulza’s comments bore relevance to the theme of this year's independence celebration “Progressing in the Face of Global challenges,” an issue he thinks should remain at the forefront of the OAS agenda.

He said: “We have to get involved with other countries, other regions in order to face these problems globally. There’s no way you can turn your back on globalisation. Globalisation is happening.”

The OAS Secretary General also met with other senior government officials. He also visited OAS projects on the island and paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition Dr. Kenny Anthony.
