Wednesday, February 6, 2008 – Head of the delegation of the European Commission His Excellency Ambassador Valeriano Diaz recently presented his credentials to Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy , Governor General of Saint Lucia.
During the presentation, Dame Pearlette highlighted the cordial relations that exist between the European Union and the region.
“Your Excellency, our diplomatic relations with the European Union, which exist within the framework of the agreements that have been signed between the Union and the ACP Group of countries, have been long standing and extremely cordial,” said Dame Pearlette. “Since this co-operation began, we have benefited from national indicative programmes, regional co-operation funds, STABEX transfers, structural adjustment programmes, and NGO co-financing and different aid schemes in the area of scholarships, seminars, trade and tourism promotion among others.”
Ambassador Diaz expressed his honour to represent the European Union in Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.
“The EU has been a partner of Saint Lucia since the first Lome Convention in 1975 and I am pleased to note that our co-operation has grown over the ensuing years. I am taking up my duties at a time when the EU co-operation strategy for Saint Lucia for the next six years is about to be adopted. The strategy, which has been agreed with the Government of Saint Lucia, will focus on Competitive Enhancement,” said Ambassador Diaz.
Ambassador Diaz also told the Governor General that he will do his best to implement the co-operation strategy in an efficient manner and in close co-operation with the Government of Saint Lucia. |
