Monday,  December 15, 2008 –  Come February 2009 residents of La Borne, in the district of Gros-Islet should have water running from taps at their homes with the commencement of a long awaited water project for the area..

“From my days growing up in La Borne as a child,  I remember   the hardships people went through with the lack of water. People had to actually  pay for transportation to go to other communities to transport water to their homes. People had to rely on the infrequent distribution of water by water trucks, carry water on their heads  by buckets and so on,”  Parliamentary Representative Hon. Lenard Spider Montoute noted during the official start of the project last week.

He added: ‘ I think this is totally unacceptable in 2008. We cannot  go into 2009 with a situation like this. I know the people of  La Borne  will be relieved  at receiving this  basic amenity like every where else in Saint Lucia.”

Mr Montoute admitted  it brought him particular pleasure as it came on the second anniversary of  his election as Parliamentary Representative for the area.

“This project has become  almost a national issue. As you are aware, this  is a  topic that  has been debated  on the talk  shows and  in the news. This is a project that was  put on the agenda during  the last general election campaign  when I raised the fact   that La Borne was a community without water for decades. I decided that it would be one of my  priorities as district representative, “ he added.

“I look forward with pleasure to  knowing that next year  during the dry season  La Borne people  will not have  to endure  the sufferings they have undergone for decades now. Since  assuming office  I have undertaken  to explore  for water for the La Borne community and on that  occasion  we attempted to do some underground  water exploration. I however remained  relentless  in pursuit  of fulfilling  that campaign promise,” Montoute stated.

The Parliamentary Representative for Gros-Islet took the opportunity to announce that his first area of focus in the new year will be attending  to the road network in the constituency including the completion of the Norbert Road project.

The water project will include the laying of  22,000 feet of pipe and  the installation of water pumps.  District Representative Montoute expects its completion within three months.
