Thursday, December 18, 2008 – The Ministry of Agriculture is continuing to promote diversification in the agricultural industry, and as such has imported sixty pigs from Canada, as part of efforts to expand the livestock sector. Deputy Director of Agricultural Services, Eden Compton said the expansion of the agricultural productive sector, through livestock development, is a focal point at this time.
The pigs are currently being held in a quarantine facility for a period of twenty one days. Compton says this is a precautionary measure, to prevent the pigs from getting exposed to disease agents that may be present in their new environment.
“Following the 21 days there will be a gradual exposure. These animals are then expected to become part of a national breeding plan. This whole effort is in anticipation of our new meat processing facility which will be built at Beausejour, Vieux Fort,” Compton said.
Beausejour, Compton said, is earmarked to become the leading entity that will provide quality breeding stock not only for pigs but for small ruminants, enabling farmers to adequately supply the demands of the market.
“The facility is expected to be the catalyst for the growth and development of the livestock sector, to provide the sort of marketing network, where all meat and meat products and cuts will be produced for the hotels, supermarkets and community based distribution outlets,” Compton added. |
