Thursday, August 7, 2008 – All St. Lucian children between the ages of 7 to 10 years have been given an opportunity to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life for their most vulnerable counterparts.
On Tuesday, the Division of Human Services and Family Affairs within the Ministry of Health launched the naming competition of the soon to be completed Transit Home for Children.
Director of the Human Services and Family Affairs Division, Clementia Eugene, gave some insight on the premise of the competition. “We felt since the home is designed for children who are victims of abuse and neglect, we thought that is was necessary to let children be part of selecting a suitable name for the home. And today we are here with our partners who will donate the prizes for the winners and we would like all children between the ages of 7-10 years to complete an application form and select a name for the home.”
The Transit Home is intended to house 21 children between the ages of 0-18. The maximum length of stay per child is 6 months, during which family case workers will work on rehabilitating both parents and children.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Family Affairs, Human Services and Gender Relations Mr. Feliz St. Hill was on hand at the competition's launching ceremony where he applauded employees of the Ministry for their concerted endeavour.
“The efforts of our staff cannot be overlooked. These officers have worked tirelessly in ensuring that today we can safely look to the completion of the transit home for children, and welcome the naming of the home by a St. Lucian national who will be successful in his/her effort at creating a name for this long awaited initiative,” said St. Hill
The Transit Home naming competition is set to run until September 29th, and offers attractive prizes for winners including mobile phones, a computer, and other educational supplies. |
