Thursday,  August 7, 2008 –  Prime Minister, the Honourable Stephenson King has established a Committee to plan Inaugural Caribbean Wellness Day and a National Consultation on the Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases in St Lucia.   Members of the Committee include representatives from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Transformation, the Chamber of Commerce, the Labor Movement and the Government Information Service.

CARIOM Heads of Government issued the Port-of-Spain Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Summit Declaration in 2007. The inaugural Caribbean Wellness Day on 13 September 2008 is in commemoration of this landmark summit, which sought to ensure that the region was united against the epidemic of chronic NCD’s.

The core messages to be articulated by all Member States revolve around:

  1. No tobacco,
  2. Less Salt, Less Fat,
  3. Daily Exercise and
  4. Blood pressure checks.

The Committee will discuss the overall programme which will be focused on the 15 actionable recommendations of the Port of Spain Declaration.

In addition, the Committee will discuss and make plans for a National Consultation on the Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases in St Lucia.  This will be undertaken in conjunction with PAHO.   This activity will further consolidate the commitment to the Port-of-Spain Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Summit Declaration and will focus attention on the need to build a healthy nation.
