Friday, April 11, 2008 –Guidance counsellors at the island's secondary schools are being encouraged to promote the University of the West Indies (UWI), as the institution of choice. On Monday, the counsellors were the target audience of a seminar conducted by a team of student advisers and registry staff, representing the three campuses of UWI. The seminar formed part of a package of activities in commemoration of the UWI's 60th anniversary.
The UWI operates campuses in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. Addressing the counsellors, Head of the UWI St. Lucia Centre, Veronica Simon said, “The UWI is an icon of Caribbean integration and culture. It is one of the few Caribbean institutions owned entirely by ourselves. The UWI has collaborative links with over 60 universities around the world and offers international exchange and study -abroad programmes at participating universities.”
Young people according to Simon, would be very interested in that sort of arrangement, “because they love the excitement in being able to go to other universities, to visit and participate in new cultures, and coming to the UWI does not preclude them from doing that.”
The UWI St. Lucia Chapter has commended the institution on its renewed thrust. “UWI is currently undertaking what it should have, many years ago in terms of educating Caribbean people on what is has to offer, so that Caribbean people can make the UWI the higher institution rather than thinking of other institution before they think of UWI, ” said Public Relations Officer Jerry George.
The UWI St. Lucia centre also hosted an open day alongside the Guidance Counsellors Seminar, for Secondary Students, at its premises on the Morne. In addition to the activities to mark its 60 -year milestone, the UWI will also undertake the launch of an open campus in July, 2008.
Several new programs have been introduced at the UWI campuses, including events management, liberal arts and nursing. For the first time medicine will be introduced at the Cave Hill campus in Barbados. |
