Thursday, April 17, 2008 – Rising gas prices is a global challenge and consumers worldwide are now more concerned than ever that they get value for money spent at petrol stations. Caribbean consumers are no exception as they too are feeling the pinch at the pump. In the spirit of regional collaboration, Saint Lucia is helping Trinidadians to ensure that they are getting what they pay for through the efforts of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards (SLBS).
The Metrology Department of the SLBS has been verifying gas pumps from 1996 (under the Weights & Measures Ordinance of 1911) and from 2000 under the Metrology Act No. 17 of 2000. Over the years, the SLBS’s Metrology Department has acquired considerable experience in gas pump verification. In fact, Saint Lucia’s verification programme for gas pumps has been described as the most successful in the Eastern Caribbean.
In the 3-day training session which began on Wednesday April 16th, the SLBS has been training personnel from the Legal Metrology Inspectorate of the Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) in best practices in gas pump verification. It is also assisting senior officials from Trinidad’s recently established Legal Metrology Inspectorate in the development of a modern gas pump verification programme.
TTBS’s Chief Inspector of Legal Metrology, Erica Caruth, says the training is giving her and her team “a good idea of what needs to get done” with respect to their own programme which is to be established shortly. |
