Friday,  April 18, 2008 –  Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Senator the Honourable Allen Chastanet has been explaining the reasons for not hosting the opening of the 2008 St. Lucia Jazz at the usual venue. The opening of the “Best Party in the Caribbean”, will be held at the Fond d' Or Heritage Park instead of the usual Marchand Ground.

The minister says the move was made because the Chamber of Commerce – that since last year  been solely responsible for the production of the event's opening -  suffered a major loss of revenue. According to Minister Chastanet, “The event was taken over by the Chamber of Commerce. For many years, you've heard that the one event that makes money for the St. Lucia Jazz is the opening. Well I think the Chamber of Commerce has put that to rest. They lost one hundred and fifty thousand dollars last year.”

Minister Chastanet says the new opening event, referred to as the Caribbean Jazz Explosion, will take place on the first night on the calendar of events for Jazz 2008.  He says the Tourist Board is working in collaboration with Fond d' Or, and has arranged with the Mexican Embassy  and the Cuban Embassy to have jazz bands from their respective countries play at the opening, in addition to other regional acts.

Minister Chastanet also indicates that  there is a proposal to follow up the opening event with a Pan Jazz Concert at Fond d' Or on the day after the Caribbean Jazz Explosion.
