Monday, September 17, 2007 Help Age Saint Lucia, the National Council
of and For Older Persons and the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association have come
together to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Sir John George Melvin Compton
who died on September 7th, 2007.
He was a courageous champion of justice and freedom. His devotion to Saint
Lucia was strong and passionate. This country owes much to Sir John he held
many positions of trust, confidence and honour. He was a man of rare personal
attraction, of a genial, generous nature and full of kindness, these are just
some of the positive traits outlined in the joint statement.
The statement added: He was of a noble spirit, possessed of humanitarian
principles and with compassionate understanding of suffering. His moral
integrity, high ideals, broad sympathies and unselfish devotion to democratic
principles won for him love and affection for Saint Lucia. He was liberal in
spirit and vigorous in mind.
The two organisations concluded that Sir John Compton's commitment and loyalty
to his family, friends and Saint Lucia was one of his greatest traits. In his
death Saint Lucia and the Caribbean has lost one of their greatest leaders,
the group asserted.
